Be your kids’ greatest fan. Compliment them on all of their efforts, the strength of their character and their individuality. Get your kids involved in adult-supervised after-school activities. Ask them what types of activities they’re interested in and contact the school principal or guidance counselor to find out what activities are available. Sometimes it takes a bit of experimenting to find out what your kids are best suited for, but it’s worth the effort-feeling competent makes kids much less likely to use drugs. Help your kids develop tools they can use to get out of alcohol or drug related situations. Get to know your children’s friends and their parents. Call them and check to make sure they share in your views on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Call kids’ parents if their home is to be used for a party. Make sure that the party will be alcohol-free and supervised by adults. Set curfews ...

5K RUN/WALK TO BENEFIT STRIDES FOR SOBRIETY SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 15, 2018

The Strides for Sobriety organization is hosting a 5K Sunday, April 15 in Dublin to benefit troubled teenagers in the central Ohio community who seek recovery and rehabilitation.

With a 10 a.m. start time, this year’s event will start at the Karrer Middle School football field (located at 7245 Tullymore Drive). The run/walk will take participants through a scenic route on the Dublin trail system.

Strides for Sobriety was founded in response to the fact that more young people are becoming victims of addiction, but are not readily offered recovery alternatives due to the expense of treatment. Co-founders Ramona Penland-Coyle and Laurie Penland saw first-hand the strain addiction puts on families, not only emotionally, but financially as well.

“Our run is meant to encourage youth, families and our community to participate in an event that supports a healthy lifestyle without the use of alcohol or other drugs,” says Penland. “We will use the profits from this event to help fund treatment for kids who need a chance at sobriety, to provide skills for coping and learn skills to remain clean.”

The cost for the timed (chip) race is $35. The fee for participants who are 18 years of age or younger is $25. All profits will go directly to support a teen dealing with addiction. Those choosing not to run/walk sponsor another racer or make a donation on the registration site, found here.

Sponsorship opportunities also are available; please contact Jack Curtis 614-893-8337 for more information.
